responsible for developing Compaq's Pan-European marketing literature.
As a result they were able to understand and articulate many of the
issues we faced and then propose ways to address them. This external
consultancy was instrumental in helping us develop shorter, more customer-focused
deliverables, a difficult transition we knew we had to make. Amicus
showed by doing, rewriting several of our brochures to demonstrate
this new focus. Thanks to this exercise, our department and copywriters
are currently producing sharper brochures that speak more directly
to the needs of our customers.

I
have worked with Leslie on several occasions, often asking her to
consult on projects on which I am working. I also attended one of
her copywriting seminars and have been pleased to recommend her
to my clients. During our two-year association, I feel I have gotten
to know her work quite well.
What
strikes me most about her writing (and consulting) is that she always
approaches text with a keen eye on how the end customer will experience
it. When I ask Leslie to comment on my text, for example, I can
count on her to isolate any passages that do not speak directly
to the end reader. She quickly weeds out any text that is too company-oriented
or vague, and always suggests ways to make the text more customer-oriented.
Leslie teaches this customer focus in her seminars and also practices
it in her own writing.
For
example, last year she did an extensive series of brochures for
Akzo Nobel Engineering on my recommendation. I can tell you that
the client was pleased with the results, and impressed with Leslie's
professionalism, constructive suggestions and rapport with all members
of the project team. Although Leslie was always sensitive to Akzo
Nobel's wishes, she was also looking at how she could translate
its (often highly technical) information into easily readable, customer-oriented
text. Akzo Nobel Engineering had little experience with this kind
of writing since it had long served only as a consulting department
within Akzo Nobel, and it was grateful for Leslie's expertise in
this area. I later heard that several of the people who briefed
her on the project were impressed that someone without a background
in either engineering or process manufacturing could interpret their
information so well.
Allow
me to close by summing up why I think Leslie Skyrms is such a talented
writer of commercial texts. First, she approaches every assignment
by thinking about both her customer and her customer's customer.
Second, she is able to assimilate even unfamiliar information and
translate it into sound commercial arguments. Third, she is extremely
professional and prompt in completing her assignments. And finally,
she is easy to work with without being shy about making tactful
suggestions for improvement.
I
plan to continue to work with Leslie Skyrms as the occasion arises
and am happy to recommend her to you as a writer and consultant.
